Trains, our inspiration

The Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution was born in the middle of the 18th century, and with it, its main driving force: the steam engine. A new means of transport that dazzled writers, merchants, adventurers... This different and revolutionary way of travelling was here to stay.

Inspiration

Our starting point as the spirit of Hotel Via Sants Barcelona is the train main station. A hotel inspired by the extraordinary imaginary of trains and stations: cardboard, fabric or leather suitcases for the most sophisticated, elegant carriages-restaurant, private compartments with luxury beds.

Sants and L'Eixample district

The world of trains and the Industrial Revolution play a decisive role in the configuration of the districts where our hotel is located: Sants and L'Eixample, just a five-minute walk from Sants train station and ten minutes from the Fira de Barcelona. It is worth remembering that Sants, before becoming a district, was a small village, which was annexed to Barcelona between 5 May 1883 and 12 July 1884.

Commercial hub

This neighbourhood arose in the heat of the Industrial Revolution and to the rhythm of the rattling trains of Barcelona's most important station, which also bears its name. Sants and L'Eixample was the neighbourhood of the textile factories, populated by shops and workers who filled its streets with life. This unstoppable development would lead to the appearance of the streets of Sants and Creu Coberta. Over the years, it has become one of the most important commercial hubs in Europe. Via Sants Hotel Barcelona enjoys a privileged location, just three kilometres from the main attractions of the city centre and the numerous shops and restaurants of La Rambla and Paseo de Gracia.

From 19th to 20th century

On the other hand, we have the L'Eixample neighborhood, built during the years of Catalonia's industrialization, at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. To speak of this neighborhood is to speak of the Catalan bourgeoisie and Modernism, an intellectual and architectural movement, a faithful reflection of the period.

Our tribute

This amalgam of industry and commerce, the sound of train carriages arriving at Sants station and an emerging bourgeois class building a neighborhood faithful to the tastes of the time, have served as a source of inspiration for the creation of the Hotel Via Sants Barcelona. A refuge that recalls and pays tribute to an industrial, travelling, and restless past that has become our legacy. A legacy that can be felt as you walk through the streets that border our hotel, thanks to its buildings and the atmosphere of life and progress that has endured over time.
